PostSubject: A question of painting black armor and general painting help.   Sat May 09, 2009 9:34 pm

Hey guys I just wanted to know if you you had any ideas on highlighting black armor besides hard edged highlights, not a big fan of that. I've already checked out the GW site and haven't found anything that I really like, so i thought I'd ask you. And just see if you guys had any comments on other areas where I could improve. Keep in mind I've only been painting for about 3 months and I paint more from a modeling aspect and not gaming so if the model has some strange or illegal combo its only because i think it looks good and it'll never see a table anyway so why not. Anyway on to the pics. Very Happy

Thanks again guys.

I use codex grey with a little bit of black to darken it.

So use some grey for highlights.

I've always had similar difficulties. I personally find maybe one or two highlights of a grey thats only a bit lighter than black will be good. Followed by the light sharp edged highlights.
If you want, it would pay off to experiment a bit, but you may not want to risk it. Smile
I like your job on the white cloth by the way. How do you do that?

Man that looks good enough already lol
for the highlights i say add black and grey then gradually work urself up form that to a pure grey could take a while but is well worth it

I feel you...
If I start with a very dark charcoal grey...
I wash-in the Black...

I prefer mixing a bit of blue into the black for the highlight and try to avoid highlighting with grey...I prefer not to use the out-lined armour plate look...That's all over 40K...
I mean sure it looks fine from the other side of the table....
But I'm trying to kill that guy...why shoud he get the good view?

So he's dying with something beautiful infront of him/her. Wink

Painting looks good. Would highlight with a slightly lighter coulor as the black. Never done it myself tho. Wink

Would you belive it's all painted with cheap hoddy lobby paint, I just laid down a base of brown and worked my way up to an off white. Still have some details to finish on this guy though.

Thanks again guys.

My suggestion for a fast highlight, just take some codex gray and then wipe almost all of it on to a paper towel. Then just give the module a quick dusting, if you don't over do it, it should come out nice

hobby lobby paint is fine if thats all u got as u get more into the hobby try to get into some better paints. another thing u might wanna check out is wet palet...... esp with using the cheapo paints might work real real good for you. i plan on doing a vid on it just havnt gotten there yet, so until i do look it up on the web and try it. i think it would be a heaven send for ya.

like ur work...hard to belive thats only 3 mnonth exp........if thats true were all in trouble when u get good Smile
'
for ur armor and the black, i like both the gray tech and the blue one too. if ur going with blue maybe try purp as well. whatever u use..... go with thin coats. a few thin coats are btr than one thick

I like what you have already...but you can try and do what I do. Highlight it with a darker grey...then thake the black wash and wash the black parts...it will make the grey even darker and they you will slight highlights.
