PostSubject: The Strength of Brothers   Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:56 am

I thought of doing some fiction and figured I'd use my chapter as the basis. Enjoy!

Jarvis looked up and saw the drop light turn green. He turned to the drop hatch at the rear of the Thunder Hawk gunship and charged out the hatch. As he fell he applied the thrusters of his jump pack to slow his descent. He looked to his sides and saw the rest of his veteran squad doing the same. Eventually he broke through the low lying clouds and saw the battle field below. A dreadnought had a striking scorpion in its close combat arms and tore it in two. Blood splattered on its armor, covering the Heraldry of the Sons of Olsalvo chapter. Harlequins charged across the field at a Tactical squad of Astartes in a trench. The heavy bolter fired, taking two of the xenos down in a hail of bolts. The harlequins charged on despite this loss. A marine with a flamer stepped forward, clicked on the ignition and poured incendiary fluid over the charging Eldar. The Death Jester and his retinue charged on, losing three more aspect warriors. "Incoming!" he heard an Astartes cry over the vox network. He saw a veteran sergeant step forward, Power sword and plasma pistol in hand. The harlequins returned fire at close range into the marines, cutting down two where they stood. Bolter fire rang out as the marines prepared to engage. One last harlequin fell without reaching the trench. The sergeant fired his plasma pistol, instantly killing one of the retinue. Then, close combat initiated. Eight Astartes against 3 Harlequins. The veteran swung at a harlequin, slicing it clean in half at the waist with his power sword. The Death Jester was slaughtering four marines who charged him. Three marines had engaged the last Harlequin who managed to wound a marine before dying. The sergeant engaged the Death Jester and after being wounded severely, finished the xenos off with a shot from his plasma pistol.

"Touching down in 10" Jarvis' wing man called over the vox. They had not encountered any fire from the ground yet, they had the element of surprise for now. "May the Emperor's will give us strength." Jarvis replied. The squad landed near the Eldar lines and Jarvis cried "Brother's, follow me into battle." They charged the surprised guardians who tried to scramble out of the trench, cutting into their backs with chainswords. One managed to get away and ran back past a large building. Jarvis' veteran squad charged in hot pursuit. Suddenly the guardian stopped, turned and fired it's shuriken catapult. The projectiles bounced harmlessly off of Jarvis' power armor. He fired into the guardian with his bolt pistol. The bolt exploded inside the guardian's chest and split him in two.

That seemed easy Jarvis thought. Too easy. "Stay on your guard" he cried. The squad formed a loose circle and scanned outwards looking for enemies. Then, they came. Warp spiders materialized around them. They were outnumbered, the tide of warriors from the void matching their men 3 to 1. "There's too many of them!" Jarvis heard his battle brother shout. He grimaced and hit the activation rune on his power sword. "No retreat, no surrender!"

That's all for now. If enough people like it, I'll continue.

"For the Emperor!" his comrade, Zane, shouted. The squad charged outwards, weapons raised, bracing for the inevitable counter-attack. Then from behind them came a deep, hollow, echoing voice "I am here to destroy you." Jarvis took a moment to glance over and saw the Venerable Furioso dreadnought Encantus marching towards the circle of Warp Spiders. The xenos turned and began firing at the dreadnought. Jarvis saw that his squad was watching the xenos attack and shouted "Attack! Attack!" The squad charged into the Warp Spiders from behind and began to fight their way through the Eldar. Encantus grabbed two Warp Spiders in his mighty fists and threw them hard into the ground. The xenos continued to charge into the dreadnought. Encantus turned his flamer on the enemies around him and spun his upper body in a furious whirlwind attack. The flaming warriors were sent flying in all directions and those that lived were soon mopped up by Jarvis' squad.

"The Emperor be pr-" battle-brother Domin began to say, but was cut short when a shuriken projectile penetrated his helmet, instantly killing him. "What the -" Jarvis started. "Rangers! In the ruins!" Zane cried. "Charge!" The squad charged across the open ground to the ruins. Brother Cotus cried out in pain as he was shot through the chest plate and fell to the ground. "Open fire!" Jarvis ordered. The Astartes fired their bolt pistols into the windows and openings of the ruined buildings. There was a cry as a ranger was killed on one of the upper stories. Jarvis felt a stab of pain in his right shoulder as a projectile shot through the armor pad. They reached the building and jumped to the upper levels.

A ranger who was aiming out a window was killed when Zane blew through the wall next to him and mercilessly cut him down with his chainsword. The squad swept through the buildings and cleared out the rangers, losing brother Laneo when part of the ruins collapsed on him. "Fall back and re-group." Jarvis called over the vox. "The Emperor Protects" came the replies. Jarvis stood over the bodies of Domin, Cotus and Laneo, cursing his bad luck at losing three good brothers. A voice called "Brother-Captain Jarvis." Jarvis turned and saw the figure of Chaplain Lanto standing behind him. "Good day Chaplain." Jarvis replied. "How is it that you ended up on the field so early in the purging of this world?" Lanto shook his head "You know it is my duty to lead the Fated into battle. They were the first ones to come down to this unholy place." Jarvis bowed his head "You are correct Chaplain." "Carry on, Captain." Lanto said, and turned away. "Yes, Chaplain." Jarvis turned to see an apothecary already working on retrieving the geneseed from his fallen comrades.

Zane had his hand to the side of his helmet, he was receiving a transmission. He nodded, he was talking to someone. He looked up "Sir, the commander wants us on the Emperors Wrath. He sent a Thunder Hawk to retrieve us. It should be here in 18. We should report to the extraction zone." "Yes. That is a good idea. Squad move out." he put his fist out in the direction of the EZ.

Just so you know, at points I might jump from this veteran squad to other characters

Jarvis bounded, his jump pack lifting him off the ground in an arc that carried him 24 meters. They were nearing the EZ and Jarvis could see the expansion of the forces that had landed since their deployment. He could see Thunderhawks landing all over, spilling out their precious cargo of Astartes and vehicles. The EZ was an open space in one of the vast forests that covered the rural parts of the planet. He could hear the Thunderhawk before he saw it, the ships massive engines roaring with the effort of maintaining power. The loading bay hatch was already opened and a dark figure stood at the entrance. Upon closer inspection, Jarvis noticed the Halved skull of the Adeptus Mechanicus on the man's left shoulder pad.

The man noticed the approaching veterans and said "Come. We must make haste." He turned and strode quickly up the steps into the ship. Jarvis put up his hand and the squad followed. Inside Jarvis saw other marines sitting in the grav seats the lined the cargo bay. Some marines noticed his rank and saluted "Sir" "At ease, brother." Jarvis said. He found a row of open chairs and sat, his squadmates taking seats next to him. I wonder what the commander could have in store for us he thought to himself. He remembered the last time he had been invited to see the Commander face to face he had been thrilled. Commander Olsalvo himself requesting my presence. When he had arrived, there stood the commander, grim faced and all that he had expected. He had been chosen for a special ops mission. On the mission, he and his squad failed to complete the objective because Jarvis had become too concerned with the lives of his comrades. The commander had then proceeded to bust him to private. He had just recently made his way back up in rank to Captain.

The bay door closed and a voice crackled over the intercom "Proceeding to the Emperors Wrath. ETA 7 minutes." Good. Time to recap. Jarvis thought, replacing his helmet and sealing it with a hiss. He closed his eyes and felt the thrill of battle beginning to wear off.

Kal clenched his fist and heard the familiar crackle of his powerfist as he did so. He and his squad of elite terminators were preparing to teleport behind enemy lines. He hefted his assault cannon and checked the ammo reader. It glowed with a green tint, and read '1000'. Good he had full ammo, no need to re-stock. He looked to his squad leader, Valtone, who nodded and the squad moved forward onto the telepad in front of them. Techmarines were busy preparing the pad for teleportation, placing the final purity seals and whispering the final prayers to the Omnissiah.

There was a low hum, rising in pitch slowly, and Kal could feel the static electricity popping in the air around him. His HUD fogged with each breath he exhaled. The temperature was dropping, a usual occurrence. This was the second mission he and his squad had been assigned since they had arrived at this tainted world, and there were sure to be many more.

A techmarine looked up from his controlboard and nodded to Valtone, who said "Ready, my brothers. We go into the maelstrom of battle, from which many don't return. We will rejoice in the victories sure to follow, and will sorrow in the losses we suffer. Do not go into this thinking of self-accomplishments, which will surly lead to pride and heresy. We are the bringers of His divine will, the heralds of His wrath, the bearers of His words, and the enforces of His justice. Now, we go, for the honor of the Chapter."

He felt his stomach lurch as they entered warp time. He heard the moans of the damned and the cries of daemons. He saw a twisting, bloody tunnel in front of him, as if he were tumbling through the abyss. Then, the screams faded and there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Ah. So we too have succumbed to the warp. he thought. The sensation of motion ended abruptly and he saw himself in the center of a ruined city. It was midnight, and twin full moons shone down on him from above. Such beauty. He thought. How could such a planet be victim to heresy.

His squad-brothers materialized around him, and he felt secure once more. Valtone called over the vox “Move, brothers!” “Agreed.” Kal answered, with his brothers. They advanced slowly through the ruins, and Kal scanned the rubble with his Auspex, checking for any signs of movement or heat. “Halt!” Valtone said. The squad stopped, in sync from years of training. “Brother Kal, come forward to scan this area.” Kal turned and advanced to the side of his captain. “What is your will?” Kal inquired. “This street appears to be mined. Scan it for signs of heat.” Valtone said, making a sweeping motion with his hand. “It will be done.” Kal answered.

Kal moved his eyes, slowly over the surface of the cratered road ahead. He spotted a small circle of heat on his HUD. He pointed to the spot and said “There is a mine near that intersection, approximately 100 meters north.” Valtone nodded and said “Well done, brother.” He pointed done the street adjacent to them and said “We will move around it. The area of effect on these mines is too dangerous.” The squad nodded and followed him down the next street. They kept to the shadows, moving quietly as they went.

“Primary objective is 20 meters east.” Brother Jawal said. “Acknowledged” Valtone replied. “Initiate personal teleporters.” The squad activated small teleporters on their belts. The report had read that the scout team assigned to place a teleport homer inside the target for the squad had been neutralized near their destination. Kal prayed that the Emperor had been with them, and that they had placed it on target.

Almost on cue, he was in the tunnel of gore and suffering once again. This time, however, it was over quicker. He materialized in a building, behind two Eldar. They turned to see the bulky shape of a Space Marine Terminator standing behind them. He swung hard with his powerfist, knocking the first alien clear through the wall and into the next room. The second however was already on him trying to saw through his plasteel plates with a chainsword. He peeled the seer off with his powerfist and crushed it with his mighty grip.

“Kal, do you read?” Valtone cried on the vox. “Yes, brother.” Kal answered. “We must have separated during teleportation, you’re out of position. You’ll have to battle your way clear of that Eldar emplacement and link up with us once we finish these foul aliens.” Valtone said. “Orders received, brother.” Kal responded. He ended the transmission and chuckled to himself. Me, alone, against all these aliens? Heh, they don’t stand a chance he thought.
